Grey Unpleasant Wasteland EP

LYRICS: Monolithic slabs scar the skyline office workers type and file away Middle managers give flip-chart presentations As though they really have something to say and mile after mile stretch the ruins of enterprise and vanity or fraud increasing tax demands and eroded pension plans so many of us want to live abroad In this grey unpleasant wasteland... Gridlocked lanes and vast car parks at weekends we try to escape from our bullying bosses, stock market losses and boredom and red tape So many channels on TV our brains don't have time to think We bury our emotions and we down another drink In this grey unpleasant wasteland... We can't spell or do math Can't carve wood or turn spanners We're a service economy with no wit nor good manners It seems people with money bribe all the town planners in this grey unpleasant wasteland... Statistics govern everything no matter how bent or how flawed Regardless of the measures we all want to know who scored Living up to expectations of those who live in glass houses Bottling up and bubbling under - the anger this arouses! In this grey unpleasant wasteland...

about

The band are tight and driven on this rock track - growling bass, Copelandish drums, retro guitar textures, spacious synthesizer and vocal harmonies propel the song through a blistering snapshot of neoliberal England as relevant to post-Brexit Tory Britain now as to post-Thatcher Tory Britain then.
The Senses Collide album features an extended version with an additional verse, extended intro and longer ending.

LYRICS:

Monolithic slabs scar the skyline
office workers type and file away
Middle managers give flip-chart presentations
As though they really have something to say
and mile after mile stretch the ruins
of enterprise and vanity or fraud
increasing tax demands
and eroded pension plans
so many of us want to live abroad

In this grey unpleasant wasteland...

Gridlocked lanes and vast car parks
at weekends we try to escape
from our bullying bosses, stock market losses
and boredom and red tape
So many channels on TV
our brains don't have time to think
We bury our emotions and
we down another drink

In this grey unpleasant wasteland...

We can't spell or do math
Can't carve wood or turn spanners
We're a service economy with no wit
nor good manners
It seems people with money
bribe all the town planners
in this grey unpleasant wasteland...

Statistics govern everything
no matter how bent or how flawed
Regardless of the measures
we all want to know who scored
Living up to expectations
of those who live in glass houses
Bottling up and bubbling under -
the anger this arouses!

In this grey unpleasant wasteland...

A lover with no name
A compensation claim
Cars and clothes and fame
Jacked up on cocaine
An alcohol-soaked brain -
anything to dull the pain
But then Monday comes again...

in this grey unpleasant wasteland...
